Mount Vernon, George Washington’s Home

Codman Estate in January

Historic Homes Magazine Travel - George Washington’s Home, Mount Vernon, Virginia

A trip to Mount Vernon. The holidays, and especially Christmas time, is a great time to visit our first President’s home. The day we visited was a sunny warm day and the crowds were minimal. We toured the grounds, the home and out buildings and the amazing view of the Potomac River.

Mount Vernon is an American landmark, home to our Founding Father, George Washington. The Washington family acquired land in the area in 1674. Around 1734, the family embarked on an expansion of its estate that continued under George Washington, who began leasing the estate in 1754 before becoming its sole owner in 1761.

Mount Vernon was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1960.
